Shower Steamers and How to Use Them

Shower Steamers and How to Use Them

Taking baths in Malaysia is an impossible feat, unless you are on vacation or are lucky enough to have a bath tub in your home. With that in mind, I was thrilled to discover shower steamers - small, fragrant tablets that release aromatic steam when placed in the shower.

Shower steamers offer a simple yet effective method to turn an ordinary shower into a serene spa-like oasis. Packed with potent mood-enhancing aromas, these steamers can elevate your spirits & induce a sense of tranquility as you breathe in the alluring fragrance and immerse yourself in a complete state of zen.

In this blog post, I'm going to share everything I know about shower steamers - what they are, how to use them, and why they're so much fun!

What are Shower Steamers?

Shower Steamers are tablets that fizz & dissolve in the shower, releasing essential oils and fragrances into your shower steam. Each one comes in a variety of scents that are designed to create a different mood or effect. For example, lavender steamers are great for relaxing after a long day, while citrus steamers are invigorating and energizing.

Apart from their pleasant fragrance, shower steamers possess a calming effect that can aid in recovery. Many people have used them to alleviate stress, enhance relaxation, or provide a rapid boost of energy. It's therapeutic benefits can be credited to the essential oils infused within the shower steamer.

How do Shower Steamers work?

Shower steamer are mainly made from baking soda and citric acid, and once it mixes with water from your shower, a fizzing reaction will occur.

That reaction creates gasses, one of which is carbon dioxide which releases the essential oils packed in your shower steamer in the air in the process. That’s how these steamers work in giving you a sauna-like experience in the shower.

Here are some benefits of using shower steamers:

  1. Relax & Reduce Stress:  Shower steamers that are scented in citrus, lime or lavender have calming properties that can help reduce stress and promote relaxation.

  2. Uplift your mood: The refreshing scents of lemon & spearmint can have a positive effect on your mood, helps center your focus and gets you ready to face the day.

  3. Relieves respiratory issues: Shower steamers with a blend of tea tree & eucalyptus can help provide relief to sore muscle, sinusitis & allergies.

  4. Softens and nourishes the skin: The steam from shower steamers can help to open up pores, allowing the skin to absorb moisture more effectively, leading to softer, smoother, and more nourished skin.

Shower Steamers are a relatively easy to use and are an inexpensive way to create a spa-like experience in your bathroom.

How to Use Shower Steamers?

It's really quite simple. Just follow the steps below to create your own invigorating shower routine

  1. Start by turning on your shower (hot water) and let the steam build up inside the shower. You can adjust the water temperature back after.
  2. Place one steamer in the corner of your shower (away from direct stream of water), but close enough for water splashes to hit and let it dissolve as you shower. The idea is to let the tablet fizz and release it's fragrance into the steam.
  3. The warm steam packed with aromatherapeutic scents will create a delightful, spa-like atmosphere in your shower allowing you to relax and enjoy your shower like never before.

You can also place multiple steamers in your shower if you want a stronger scent or a longer-lasting effect. If you’re short of time and need a rapid boost of energy from your shower, place the shower steamer right under the stream of water. It will fill your shower with fragrance in seconds.

  • Shower Steamers can also be used as a foot soak to relieve aching feet. Fill up a bucket of water and use half of the steamer. Do take note as you may feel a cold tingling sensation after your soak. That is the menthol doing is magic!

Note : One thing to keep in mind when using shower steamers is that they are not meant to be used on your skin. They're designed to be used in the shower only, and should not be applied directly to your body (except your feet as you are soaking in it). Also try not to touch your eyes after handling the shower steamer as it will sting your eyes from the menthol. If you do get some on your skin or eyes, just rinse it off with water.

When to Use Shower Steamers

Shower steamers can be used on a daily basis, but they can also be especially beneficial on certain occasions. Here are some instances when a shower steamer can make a significant difference to your day:

  • When you need an extra energy boost in the morning or feel sluggish. The right essential oil-infused shower steamer can give you an instant pick-me-up just like a cup of coffee!
